Indian badminton queen PV Sindhu, who is recovering from an injury, will attend the opening ceremony of the National Games 2022 in Gujarat on Thursday.

The two-time Olympic medallist had sustained an ankle injury during the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where she won the women’s singles gold medal.

“It is unfortunate that I will not be competing in the Games due to my injury,” Sindhu said. “Had I been fit, I would have definitely represented my state (Telangana).

“The National Games is a great opportunity for all the athletes and everyone I have spoken to is excited about it. I am sure the badminton matches will be very exciting,” the Indian badminton player added.

PV Sindhu’s injury, on her left ankle, is a stress fracture and has been advised to rest, as part of her treatment. The injury had also sidelined her from the badminton world championships, held in Tokyo, Japan last month.

Badminton at the National Games 2022 will start on October 2.

Sindhu’s father PV Ramana, a former volleyball international, said it was unfortunate that his daughter could not compete in the National Games.

“She was very keen to compete,” Ramana said. “Unfortunately, she cannot do so as her next review with the doctors and MRI will be in the first week of October.”

Winner of silver at Rio 2016 and bronze at Tokyo 2020, Sindhu has her eyes set on the big events in the next two years while remaining injury free.

“It is important that I take care of myself and focus on the challenges ahead in 2023 (Asian Games) and 2024 (Paris Olympics),” Sindhu explained.
