Indian badminton star PV Sindhu, who has been out of action since winning the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in August, hopes to be back on court for the season-ending BWF World Tour Finals 2022, which will be held in China in December.

Despite picking up an injury early in the tournament, PV Sindhu beat Canada’s Michelle Li in the women’s singles final in Birmingham to win her maiden individual CWG gold medal. The two-time Olympic medallist played most of her matches with a strapped left leg.

Later, it was discovered that PV Sindhu had sustained a stress fracture on her left ankle.

“It’s getting better and hopefully, I’ll start (playing) in December,” PV Sindhu said during a press conference on Monday.

The 2022 BWF World Tour Finals are scheduled in Guangzhou, China, from December 14 to 18.

PV Sindhu, who won the women’s singles event at the inaugural BWF World Tour Finals in 2018, said that it was important to give her body proper rest ahead of a busy season next year.

In addition to the annual world championships and BWF World Tour events, the 2023 badminton calendar also includes the Asian Games in September-October.

“I am taking the break positively. I think this is the only time I will get a break because next year is going to be a hectic one with tournaments lined up one after another,” PV Sindhu said.

PV Sindhu is India’s most successful badminton player of all time. Apart from winning a silver medal at Rio 2016 and a bronze at Tokyo 2020, PV Sindhu is the only Indian to win a gold medal at the world championships in 2019. She has also won two silver and as many bronze medals at the world championships.
