Three wins from three meant it was another good day in the boxing ring for Great Britain at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Friday (30 July).

First up was Caroline Dubois, who edged highly-rated USA fighter Rashida Ellis 3-0 in a thrilling women’s lightweight (57-60kg) Round-of-16 encounter.

There was very little to separate the pair, with ex-Youth Olympic Games champion Dubois deploying her razor-sharp jab to counter the American’s straight right hands.

Round two saw a nervous moment for the Brit, when she confused the ten-second warning for the bell. Ellis rushed in to capitalise, but was unable to do so.

Two judges scored the bout 28-28 even, overruled by three scores of 29-27 in favor of Dubois at Kokugikan Arena in Tokyo.

The 20-year-old will take on Thailand’s Sudaporn Seesondee in the quarter-finals.

Men’s welterweight (63-69kg) No.1 seed Pat McCormack made short work of world bronze medallist Bobo-Usmon Baturov in their quarter-final clash.

After sustaining a cut over his eye after a clash of heads, the Brit found his rhythm and landed a number of stylish combinations on his Uzbekistani opponent.

The final score was a 4-1 unanimous decision in favour of McCormack, guaranteeing at least a bronze medal for the 2019 world champion.

In the semi-finals he will face Ireland’s Aidan Walsh.

Things weren’t quite so simple for Benjamin Whittaker in the Men’s light heavyweight (75-81kg) quarter-final.

After an even contest, the European Games silver medallist land a few clean shots in a scrappy final round to edge a 3-2 split decision against Brazil’s Keno Machado.

Next up for Whittaker, who is also guaranteed a bronze medal, is a semi-final clash against ROC athlete Kmam Khataev.
