Street skateboarding star Nyjah Huston will take centre stage at the Olympic Qualifier Series (OQS) 2024 in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China from 16-19 May.
The World No. 2 is one of the pre-event favourites, having won three Olympic qualifying competitions - the 2022 and 2023 World Skateboarding Tour events in Rome and the Lausanne Street 2023 - before finishing seventh at the Street World Championship Tokyo 2023.
On top of his obvious talent, Huston also has a point to prove.
The California native was a favourite for gold at Tokyo 2020 - the sport's Olympic debut - but only managed to isappointingly finished in seventh place. Speaking to Olympics.com in 2022 at the first Olympic qualifier, Huston revealed that for the Olympic Games Paris 2024 there would be a shift in his approach.
World Skate Ranking points will be the ultimate determinant as to who will secure a quota spot for Paris but for the two OQS stops (Shanghai and Budapest on 20-23 June), the points on offer will be much higher than in previous competitions, meaning no one is safe and everything is to skate for.
By the end of qualifying, the field for Paris 2024 will be known with 20 skaters set to obtain a quota spot. Only three skaters from one National Olympic Committee (NOC) can compete at the Games.
As National Olympic Committees have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games, athletes' participation at the Paris Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024.
