It was a golden day on the track for a trio of world champion American athletics stars, with wins for Noah Lyles in the 200m, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone in the 400m and Athing Mu in the 800m.
The victories served as final preparation ahead of next month's U.S. Track and Field Championships (6-9 July), with a sold-out crowd of over 4,000 fans in attendance for the 2023 USATF NYC Grand Prix in New York City at Icahn Stadium on Saturday (24 June).
Lyles was unbothered with a 19.82 in the 200m, the final race of the day, easily fending off up-and-coming teenager Issam Asinga (20.25).
"The first 100 went really really well," Lyles said on NBC. "Off the turn it was a little bit of a journey, [but] I had to shut the door quick on them," he added of Asinga and third-place finisher Elijah Morrow (20.30).
Asked about the looming showdown with other American sprinting stars - including Erriyon Knighton - in two weeks' time in Eugene, Lyles said simply: "I'm ready. I'm ready."
McLaughlin-Levrone, the Olympic and world champion in the 400m hurdles, continues her foray into the 400m flat. She clocked a career-best 49.51 to topple compatriot Gabby Thomas, who was second at 50.29.
It was a busy day in Queen's, with an upset in the men's 100m as 2019 world champion Christian Coleman finished third. Great Britain's Zharnel Hughes broke a 30-year-old national record for the U.K., scorching to a 9.83, a world-leading time for the season in the men's 100m.
Ackeem Blake of Jamaica was second at 9.93, while Coleman clocked in at 10.02. Aleia Hobbs captured the women's 100m with a 10.98, while Abby Steiner soared to a 22.19 for first in the 200m.
The NYC Grand Prix is a gold-level stop on World Athletics’ Continental Tour.
NYC Grand Prix 2023: Mu makes season debut
Mu, the Tokyo 2020 winner and reigning world champion in the 800m made her season debut as she soared to victory, a 1:58.73 sealing victory early on in the meet.
It was her first race since her win at Worlds last August.
"Honestly I was not really keeping track of the months" since Worlds, said Mu, who has moved her training base to Los Angeles since then. "I’m enjoying where I’m at, the new [training] group and new environment. We don’t need to rush anything; Worlds is in August [in Budapest].”
McLaughlin-Levrone, who faded to a 49.71 at the Paris Diamond League earlier this month, said she altered her race approach heading into New York: ""It was a different approach, I went out a little more conservative," she said. "[I'm] lowering my time a little bit and still getting used to this event."
Keni Harrison rolled to a win in the women's 100m hurdles, her 12.29 time wind-aided (2.6m/s). Daniel Roberts scored an upset win over Devon Allen in the 110m hurdles, 13.01 to 13.04. Allen, who ran the third-fastest time ever at this meet a year ago (12.84), said he's still satisfied with his preparation ahead of the U.S. Championships.
