Barely a year after becoming the Olympic champion, India’s Neeraj Chopra will be chasing another slice of sporting history at the World Athletics Championships 2022 men’s javelin throw final on Sunday.

The 24-year-old Neeraj Chopra qualified for the final with ease after finishing second in Thursday’s qualifiers.

A medal-finish in Sunday’s final (Saturday in the US) at Hayward Field in Oregon can be a momentous feat for not only Neeraj Chopra but Indian sports as a whole. Live streaming of the final will be available in India.

Anju Bobby George’s women’s long jump bronze at Paris 2003 remains India’s first and only medal at the world athletics championships.

Neeraj Chopra has been in sensational form since beginning his 2022 season last month.

Neeraj Chopra started his season with a silver at the Paavo Nurmi Games with a national record-breaking throw and followed it up with a gold at the Kuortane Games in Finland.

Leading up to Oregon 2022, Chopra clinched a second-place finish at the Stockholm Diamond League, setting a new national record with a personal best throw of 89.94m.

The 88.39m mark at the Oregon 2022 qualifiers was the third-best throw in Neeraj Chopra’s career.

A world championships medal is the only piece of major honour missing from Neeraj Chopra’s trophy cabinet. He is already the reigning Olympic, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games champion.

A gold from Oregon 2022, meanwhile, will see Neeraj Chopra become only the second men's javelin thrower in history to win the world championships title immediately after an Olympic gold.

Norway's Andreas Thorkildsen was the first to achieve the feat. He became the 2009 world champion in Berlin a year after clinching the Olympic title at Beijing 2008.

Neeraj Chopra, however, will have a tough 12-man field to contend with. Reigning world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada will be the biggest challenger at Oregon 2022. Peters has the best throw in the world this year, a massive 93.07m which won him the Doha Diamond League.

Peters has also been consistently breaching the 90m mark this year and denied Neeraj Chopra the top place in Stockholm. Peters pipped Chopra to the top of the list at the Oregon 2022 qualifiers with a throw of 89.91m.

Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic, German ace Julian Weber and in-form Finnish thrower Oliver Helander, who stunned both Chopra and Peters at Paavo Nurmi, will be the other top medal contenders.

Neeraj Chopra’s compatriot Rohit Yadav and Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem are also in the 12-man final field.
