Mikaela Shiffrin made to wait as second Zagreb slalom cancelled

After claiming a fifth consecutive victory to leave her one behind Lindsey Vonn's women's World Cup win record, Shiffrin has been denied the opportunity to go level with her fellow American.

Mikaela Shiffrin will have to wait to make history after the second Zagreb slalom scheduled for Thursday (5 January) was cancelled.

On Wednesday, the double Olympic alpine skiing champion was dominant as she clinched her 81st World Cup victory to move to within one of fellow American Lindsey Vonn's all-time women's record of 82.

Unseasonably warm temperatures in the Croatian capital resulted in soft snow with the start gate lowered to make it easier for the competitors.

And on Thursday, that warmth combined with strong winds led to the second race on the Sljeme course being scrapped.

Shiffrin, 27, now goes to Kranjska Gora in Slovenia for two giant slalom races this weekend where she could match and perhaps break Vonn's record.

Then she will pursue the outright record of 86 held by Sweden's Ingemar Stenmark.
