Mikaela Shiffrin moved one step closer to alpine skiing World Cup history with her 85th win on Saturday (28 January), in a slalom at Spindleruv Mlyn, Czechia.
The American double Olympic champion, who on Tuesday became the skier with most Women's World Cup race wins, was fastest on the first run by 0.29 seconds.
Shiffrin conceded some time at the start of her second run, but made up for that in a faultless middle section to take the victory by 0.60 seconds overall, and land her 11th World Cup win of the season.
The 27-year-old now sits just one win behind Ingemar Stenmark on the the overall World Cup wins table, and can go equal with the legendary Swedish skier in Sunday's second slalom race at Spindleruv Mlyn.
"I knew it would take some risk and potentially not finish at all. But I needed my best turns to have a chance as these women are so strong. It was amazing to race with this crowd. Wow, they were so loud!" Shiffrin said after.
"I know there's a lot of Slovakian fans out here and you make our sport better."
Second place went to Germany's Lena Duerr ahead of Swiss Wendy Holdener with Petra Vlhova - despite plenty of support from fans from neighbouring Slovakia - in fourth.
Shiffrin's latest win increases her lead over Vlhova in the overall World Cup standings to 671 points with Lara Gut-Behrami of Switzerland in third.
Shiffrin is currently tied with compatriot Lindsey Vonn for the second-most women’s overall titles with five, behind Austrian Annemarie Moser-Pröll, who won five in the 1970s.
