Two-time Olympics gold medallist Jamaica, spearheaded by Olympic champions Yohan Blake and Jevaughn Minzie, will be aiming for a hat-trick of gold when the teams line up for the men’s 4x100m relay final at the Olympic Stadium on Friday.

A total of eight teams compete in the finals with the first three from each heat getting a direct qualification. The next two fastest complete the final start-list.

Jamaica, 2016 Rio and 2012 London Olympics gold medallists, topped heat 1 with 37.82 seconds. Jamaica holds the world and Olympics record at 36.84 set during the London Games.

Great Britain and Rio silver medallist Japan were the other two teams from the heat to get the direct qualification. Great Britain (38.02) and Japan (38.16) clocked their season’s best effort.

China, Canada, Rio bronze medallist, and Italy got direct qualification from the second heat. China and Canada took the top two spots in a photo-finish clocking 37.92.

The Canadian team’s charge is led by the latest Olympic 200m champion Andre de Grasse.

Italy, led by reigning 100m Olympic champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs, finished third in heat 2 to set a new national record with 37.95.

Germany (38.06) and Ghana (38.08) also advanced to the finals by virtue of being the fastest two among other teams.

The United States shockingly failed to make the 4x100m relay final after they finished sixth in their heat. The team comprised two 100m finalists, Fred Kerley and Ronnie Baker, world leader Trayvon Bromell, and Cravon Gillespie.
