Tokyo Olympics, men’s 100m final: Trayvon Bromell, Yohan Blake and others chase Usain Bolt’s crown - watch live in India
Trayvon Bromell, Yohan Blake, Andre de Grasse or someone else – who will be Usain Bolt’s successor at Tokyo 2020? Watch the men’s 100m final live to find out.
For over a decade, the men’s 100m, arguably the crown jewel in the Olympics’ sports list, has been the domain of one Usain Bolt. But at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics men’s 100m finals this Sunday, things are about to change.
With Usain Bolt, who monopolised the men’s 100m gold at Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016, hanging up his running shoes and the 39-year-old Justin Gatlin, the Athens 2004 champion, failing to qualify for Tokyo 2020, a new champion is set to be crowned.
USA’s Christian Coleman, the reigning 100m world champion, will be amiss at Tokyo due to his ban but there are still plenty of speedsters who can set the track ablaze at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo.
Yohan Blake, the London 2012 silver medallist, will look to carry forward his countryman Bolt’s legacy at Tokyo and keep the gold medal in Jamaica. However, Blake hasn’t been at his best since London 2012, failing to dip below the 9.90 second mark since his heydays.
The Jamaican’s best timing for the season is 9.95 seconds.
USA’s Trayvon Bromell, the fastest man in 2021, with a 9.77 seconds run in Florida in June, will be one of the top contenders for the Tokyo crown. He had clocked a similarly fast 9.80 seconds during the US trials.
Furthermore, the American sprinter will have a point to prove after Rio. Running with an injury at the last Summer Games, Bromell qualified for the final of the 100m but finished last. He then produced a heroic performance in 4x100m, despite tearing his Achilles tendon during the race. Bromell left the tracks of Rio in a wheelchair.
It has been a long road to recovery for the 26-year-old Trayvon Bromell, who only started to race regularly in 2020. But ahead of Tokyo, he has looked in top shape.
Bromell’s US team-mates Fred Kerley (season best of 9.86 seconds) and Ronnie Baker (season best of 9.85 seconds), however, will be giving the title favourite a tough run.
Other top contenders include Canada’s Andre de Grasse, the bronze winner from Rio, and South Africa’s Akani Simbine, who has the second-fastest timing (9.84 seconds) this season behind Bromell.
