Marco Odermatt returned to the top of the podium clinching the Super G at Beaver Creek for his first victory of the 2024/25 FIS World Cup season in Colorado on Saturday (7 December).
The Swiss skier showed why he is the reigning king of Super G with a flying run down the challenging Bird of Prey course with a winning time of one minute, 09.41 seconds (1:09.41).
The three-time overall World Cup champion has made a slow start to his season after he skied out in the opening giant slalom of the season at the end of October.
Odermatt had to be content with a second-place finish in the downhill the day before thanks to an upset victory by compatriot Justin Murisier.
But the Swiss superstar again highlighted his class upping the ante in the Super G relegating Frenchman Cyprien Sarrazin into second place, just 0.18s behind.
Odermatt has now 38 World Cup wins to his name. He needs only two more victories to tie the Swiss men's record currently held by Pirmin Zurbriggen.
Vreni Schneider holds the overall Swiss record of 55 World Cup victories.
Although Odermatt looked comfortable in first place there were some late assaults on the podium, led by Austria's Lukas Feuerstein who produced a great run late in the race to come in third with a time of 1:09.88.
Wearing bib number 39, Giovanni Franzoni (Italy) came painstakingly close to a top-three finish but had to settle for fourth clocking 1:10.01.
The Super G returned to Beaver Creek for the first time since 2022 after last year’s event was cancelled due to heavy snow.
