Marco Odermatt rounded off his 2022/23 Super G season in style by claiming the discipline's last event at the Alpine Ski World Cup Finals in Soldeu, Andorra, on Thursday (16 March).

The Swiss superstar, who had already secured the Crystal Globe before this race, bounced back from a disappointing 15th place in Wednesday's downhill to win his sixth Super G event of the campaign (the 12th overall) and move closer to Hermann Maier's record for most points collected by a man in a single World Cup season.

Despite the deteriorating snow conditions, Odermatt put down a spectacular run and crossed the finish line 0.29 seconds ahead of second-placed Austrian Marco Schwarz, pushing Aleksander Aamodt Kilde down to third (+0.71).

Yesterday's winner Vincent Kriechmayr failed to finish after skiing out but kept his third place in the discipline's standings behind title winner Odermatt and Kilde.

With this 100 points, back-to-back big Crystal Globe winner Odermatt moves to 1,942 points in the overall rankings and needs to finish in the top 3 in Saturday's giant slalom to beat the mark set by Maier in the 1999-2000 season.

Tina Maze (2,414 in 2012-13) and Mikaela Shiffrin (2,204 in 2018-19) are the only skiers to have claimed more than 2,000 poins since the current scoring system was introduced in 1991/92.

"I have achieved everything I wanted this season, so I'm going to celebrate today," said Odermatt, who also grabbed the giant slalom season title.

"With what's left in my tank, I will attack on Saturday. When it happens, then it's great. If not, then I don't owe anyone an explanation."
