Austrian speedster Vincent Kriechmayr stormed to his fourth downhill win of the season with victory at the Alpine Ski World Cup Finals in Soldeu, Andorra, on Wednesday (15 March).

The 2021 men's downhill world champion made up more than half a second in the bottom part of the course to cross the finish line nine hundredths of a second ahead of pace-setter Romed Baumann, who reached his first World Cup podium representing Germany after his switch from Austria.

Baumann's new team-mate Andreas Sander finished third, a further 0.04 seconds adrift.

Kriechmayr cemented his second place in the 2022/23 season discipline's standings behind Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, who successfully defended his downhill globe in Aspen, Colorado earlier this month.

Kilde came in tied sixth in Soldeu, 0.30 seconds behind the winner, while reigning world champion Marco Odermatt struggled with the slushy snow conditions and finished 15th, over a second off the pace.

Swiss star Odermatt, who recently retained his overall crystal globe title, is still on course to break the men's World Cup points record (2,000) set by Austrian great Hermann Maier in the 1999-2000 season.

Odermatt leads the overall standings with 1,862 points with 200 points at stake in his next two races at the Finals.
