Fresh off the back of helping Malaysia reach the Sudirman Cup semi-finals, Lee Zii Jia is back on the badminton singles circuit, and on home soil at that, when he participates in the BWF World Tour Super 500 Malaysia Masters 2023 in Kuala Lumpur from 23–28 May.
The world number 10 Lee won all five of his matches at the Sudirman Cup, the perfect response to crashing out in the first round at his previous event, the Asian Championships.
In KL, Lee will be the fourth seed – but has a tough test first up against the People's Republic of China shuttler Lu Guangzu, who reached the semi-finals at the Asian Championships before playing a reserve role at the Sudirman Cup which China eventually won.
Lee holds the upper hand in their head-to-head meetings, having won two of three prior clashes against Lu. Make it past the Chinese and Lee will face either Chinese Taipei's Lin Chun-yi or Indonesian Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo, both of whom he also holds winning records against.
The stiff test will come – if he makes it that far – in the quarter-finals, with either Denmark's Rasmus Gemke or Japan's Naraoka Kodai likely to be in his way. Gemke has beaten Lee on all four occasions they have played, while Lee and Naraoka have already faced each other twice this year, splitting the head-to-head 1–1.
