Maharashtra Open 2023, the fifth edition of India’s premier ATP 250 tennis tournament, gets underway at Pune’s Balewadi Sports Complex on Saturday.
Mukund Sasikumar, India’s top singles player in ATP rankings, Sumit Nagal and Yuki Bhambri will compete in singles. Yuki Bhambri will start from the qualifiers starting on Saturday while Mukund Sasikumar and Sumit Nagal will feature in the main draw which begins on January 2. The star attractions at the Maharashtra Open 2023 singles event include former US Open champion Marin Cilic, world No. 35 Botic van de Zandschulp and Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori, who was the Maharashtra Open runners-up in 2022.
In all, 17 of the top 100 players in the world are slated to compete at the Maharashtra Open 2023. Watch the event live on TV too.
Apart from singles, Yuki Bhambri will also compete in doubles alongside Saketh Myneni. Indian tennis great Rohan Bopanna, Ramkumar Ramanathan and Arjun Kadhe will also play in doubles, albeit with foreign players as partners.
Rohan Bopanna will be teaming up with Botic van de Zandschulp. The duo are the Maharashtra Open second-seeds behind two-time US Open champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury.
Ramkumar Ramanathan will team up with Mexico’s Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela. Arjun Kadhe and Fernando Romboli, who finished as runners-up at the Istanbul Challenger, will also compete at the Maharashtra Open.
Nathaniel Lammons-Jackson Withrow and the French pair of Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboulare are among other notable duos in doubles at the Pune meet.
Portugal’s Joao Sousa won the singles title in 2022 while the Indian pair of Rohan Bopanna and Ramkumar Ramanathan won the doubles title playing together in the last edition.
After being played behind closed doors last time due to COVID-19, the Maharashtra Open 2023 will be played in the presence of spectators.
The last Maharashtra Open was held in February. However, the 2023 edition will be held in December-January as the Australian Open Grand Slam starts on January 16. Maharashtra Open 2023 will conclude on January 7.
