Sania Mirza will play the Australian Open 2023 which is scheduled to get underway on January 16. She will team up with world No. 11 Anna Danilina of Kazakhstan for the first Grand Slam of the year, the Indian tennis ace’s father and coach Imran Mirza has  revealed.

Sania Mirza’s participation in the mixed doubles event at the Australian Open, however, is yet to be confirmed.

Sania Mirza, currently the world No. 25 in WTA Ranking for doubles, had decided to quit professional tennis after the 2022 season but later shelved her plans.

Regarded as one of India’s best tennis players of all time, Sania Mirza has won six Grand Slam titles in her career. She featured in 16 tournaments in the 2022 season but was out of action since August due to a tendon injury in her forearm. She also pulled out of the US Open 2022.

The Indian tennis player is currently playing at the ongoing World Tennis League being held in Dubai.

Sania Mirza, a former world No. 1 doubles player, progressed to the finals in WTA 500 Charleston Open and the WTA 250 Strasbourg Open in women’s doubles in 2022. Apart from two finals, she also featured in six other women’s doubles semi-finals.

Sania Mirza’s highlight of the year was making it to the Wimbledon 2022 semi-finals in the mixed doubles with her Croatian partner Mate Pavic. It was 36-year-old Saina Mirza’s first semi-final appearance in a Grand Slam in five years.

Sania Mirza has won two Australian Open titles in her career - a mixed doubles title with Mahesh Bhupathi in 2009 and a women’s doubles title with Martina Hingis seven years later.

At the Australian Open 2022, Sania Mirza paired with Nadiia Kichenok in women’s doubles and was knocked out in the first round. She teamed up with USA’s Rajeev Ram in the mixed doubles and made it to the quarter-finals.
