Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) will resume their Ligue 1 2022-23 season against Strasbourg on Thursday. PSG’s star man Kylian Mbappe is expected to feature in the starting XI just a fortnight after winning the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot in Qatar.
Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick against Argentina in the FIFA World Cup final on December 18 albeit in a losing cause. The French ace resumed training at PSG three days later.Watch PSG vs Strasbourg live streaming in India.
“He was disappointed not to lift the most beautiful of trophies (World Cup) even if he was the top scorer,” PSG head coach Christophe Galtier said. “He (Mbappe) wanted to get back in touch with the group very quickly and prepare for the upcoming deadlines.”
Brazilian forward Neymar Jr has also reported to training and will be available for PSG’s home game at the Parc des Princes. The hosts, however, will be without Argentinian legend Lionel Messi.
Messi won the best player award in Qatar and is on an extended vacation after winning the World Cup. He will return to competitive football in the first week of January.
As a result, young striker Hugo Ekitike is likely to start in Messi’s place for the defending French league champions. He featured in PSG’s friendly wins against Paris FC and Quevilly Rouen Metropole earlier this month.
Achraf Hakimi, who guided Morocco to an impressive fourth-place finish at the FIFA World Cup, is also likely to be rested.
However, Christophe Galtier, whose side is currently leading the Ligue 1 2022-23 standings with 41 points from 15 games, has plenty of options in Fabian Ruiz, Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Marco Verratti - none of whom featured in Qatar.
Meanwhile, Strasbourg, placed 19th, will look for inspiring performances from what is an injury-hit squad.
Former Fulham centre-back Maxime Le Marchand, French midfielder Dimitri Liénard, and Danish defender Thomas Delaine are struggling with injuries and won’t be available for the PSG clash. Karol Fila, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Adrien Thomasson are expected to man the backline.
PSG will play their next Ligue 1 match against second-placed RC Lens on Monday (IST). RC Lens are five points behind PSG, who are gunning for their 11th title.
