Khelo India University Games 2023 to start on May 25

The 10-day multi-sport event will be held in Lucknow, Varanasi, Greater Noida and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.

The Khelo India University Games 2023 is scheduled to start on May 25 with four cities across the state Uttar Pradesh set to host the multi-sport event.

The 10-day-long KIUG 2023, which will conclude on June 3, will be held in Lucknow, Varanasi, Greater Noida and Gorakhpur. The shooting events, however, will be organised in New Delhi. The opening ceremony will be in Lucknow while the closing ceremony will be held in Varanasi. The first sporting event, though, will be kick off on May 23.

KIUG 2023 is part of the Indian government’s Khelo India initiative, which is focused towards promoting grassroots sports and identifying young talents from all across the country.

The third edition of the Khelo India University Games will feature around 4,000 athletes from around 200 universities from across the country. All athletes will be in the under-27 category and will vie for medals in 21 sports.

The Babu Banarasi Das University in Lucknow will be converted into a Sports Village for the duration of the Khelo India University Games 2023.

Panjab University were the inaugural KIUG winners in 2020 while Jain University are the defending champions, having won the last edition in 2021 held in Bengaluru.

Swimmer Siva Sridhar of Jain University won the most number of individual medals at KIUG 2021, winning seven golds and two silvers.

Top Indian athletes, including Olympians like Srihari Nataraj, Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Divyansh Singh Panwar took part in KIUG 2021.
