The Khelo India Para Games 2023 wrapped up in New Delhi on December 17 with Haryana winning the inaugural title by securing 105 medals: 40 gold, 39 silver and 26 bronze.

KIPG 2023 began on December 10 and witnessed the participation of around 1,450 para athletes from across the country. Uttar Pradesh came second on the KIPG 2023 medal tally with 62 medals: 25 gold, 23 silver and 14 bronze while Tamil Nadu finished third with 20 gold, eight silver and 14 bronze medals. Athletes represented 32 states and Union Territories at the inaugural Khelo India Para Games.

The Games also witnessed an Asian record being bettered by Haryana's Pranav Soorma, who improved his Asian Para Games gold medal-winning performance of 30.01 with an effort of 33.54 metres in club throw event. He improved the Asian record of 31.09m held by Dharambir.

"Today, under these spotlights, we honour not just medals, but the resilient spirits and untold stories that have painted this arena," Anurag Singh Thakur, minister of Youth Affairs and Sports and Information and Broadcasting, said. "The Khelo India Para Games 2023 mark a historic chapter in our sports history, where participation eclipses mere victory.

"These past days have etched moments of unwavering human spirits, forging new milestones, talents emerging, records falling, and prejudices shattered," he added.

KIPG 2023 is the latest addition to the government of India’s Khelo India initiative, which also includes the Khelo India Youth Games, Khelo India University Games and Khelo India Winter Games.

So far, five Khelo India Youth Games, three Khelo India University Games, three Khelo India Winter Games and one Khelo India Para Games have been successfully conducted under the Khelo India initiative, which seeks to nurture the sporting culture in the country at grassroots level. The programme, run by the Government of India since 2017, has garnered widespread success and support from every nook and corner of the country.

Medal events at KIPG 2023 were held across seven sports - para athletics, para shooting, para archery, para football, para badminton, para table tennis, para weightlifting (powerlifting) at three different Sports Authority of India (SAI) facilities – the Indira Gandhi Stadium, Shooting Range in Tughlakabad and the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Para badminton matches at the IG Stadium kicked off KIPG 2023 on December 10 while the opening ceremony took place on December 11. Both para football and table tennis events concluded on December 17.
