Jon Rahm won the first men's golf major of 2023 by finishing top of the leaderboard at the 87th edition of the Masters Tournament at Augusta National on Sunday 9 April.
The 28-year-old Spaniard had long been touted as a Masters winner-in-waiting with his long hitting and spectacular putting, and he will now be a part of golf history forever after fending off some of the discipline's biggest names.
He was in the top 10 four times in succession at Augusta before finishing tied for 27th last year, and with his first Masters victory, he now has two majors to his name as he won the 2021 US Open.
Rahm joins Sergio Garcia, Jose Maria Olazabal, and the late Seve Ballesteros as Masters champions from Spain. Rahm is only the second player from Spain to win multiple different majors after Ballesteros.
"The history of the game is a big part of why I play and one of the reasons why I play and Seve (Ballesteros) being one of them," Rahm told CBS. "If it wasn't for that Ryder Cup in '97, my dad and I talk about it all the time, we don't know where I would be or as a family where we would be.
"For me to get it done on the 40th anniversary of his win (Ballesteros), his birthday, on Easter Sunday, it's incredibly meaningful. To finish it off the way I did, an unsual par, in a non-purposeful way, it was a testament to him and I know he was pulling for me today."
Other notable storylines
Phil Mickelson became the oldest golfer to finish in the top five in Masters history at the age of 52 as the three-time winner shot a 7-under 65, his joint-lowest career score at the tournament.
Mickelson finished joint-runner-up alongside four-time major winner Brooks Koepka, who led the field by four shots going into the final round, however the American's performance dipped as Sunday progressed.
Jordan Spieth had a remarkable final round at the Masters, making nine birdies. The 29-year-old from Dallas used the momentum gained from two top-five finishes in March.
Spieth's performance was all-the-more notable considering he missied the cut for the first time last year after having five top-three finishes at Augusta in eight appearances, including victory in 2015.
Scottie Scheffler (4-under), the reigning champion, finished the weekend in the top 20 alongside Tokyo 2020 winner Xander Schauffele.
