Great Britain's women's artistic gymnastics squad for the World Championships taking place in Antwerp from 30 September and 8 October was announced on Monday (4 September).
Jessica Gadirova, Alice Kinsella, Georgia-Mae Fenton, Ondine Achampong and Ruby Evans have been named to the team.
The quintet join the men's side, announced last week as three-time Olympic champion Max Whitlock, Jake Jarman, James Hall, Courtney Tulloch and Harry Hepworth, in heading to Belgium.
On the women's side, the team will be looking to repeat or better their history-making heroics of 2022 when the squad secured a best-ever result of silver. Gadirova continued that record-breaking theme by claiming a first-ever individual all-around medal for a British woman, with bronze, and also secured the floor title.
"It’s always a huge honour to be selected to represent Great Britain at a major championship and I’m looking forward to, once again, wearing the GB flag and competing against the world's best. Last year's World Championships in Liverpool was one of my best gymnastics experiences and I’m excited to compete again with an amazing team and make some more special memories,” Gadirova said of the announcement.
On the men's side, Whitlock, will be competing in his first major competition since Tokyo 2020, in 2021, having only decided to return to the Olympic fray in February.
"I'm really excited to be selected for my seventh World Championships," said the three-time world champion on the apparatus, who only announced a bid for Paris 2024 in February. "This one feels special. I’ve worked harder, become fitter and approached this build-up like never before."
Should the 30-year-old make it to a fourth Olympic Games and then claim a medal, he'll be the first gymnast ever to win four Olympic medals on the same piece of apparatus.
But he'll need to be selected first.
GB are the only nation to have already qualified teams in both the men's and women's artistic gymnastics competitions for Paris 2024, courtesy of their top three finishes at the 2022 worlds – the men claimed a stunning bronze at the home championships in Liverpool in 2022. They will be joined by USA and Canada in the women's competition, and People's Republic of China and Japan in the men's event.
The 2023 World Championships is the final opportunity for nations to qualify a team for Paris 2024, with the top nine nations – bar those who have already qualified – securing their spots in France.
Those currently rehabbing who will be hoping to be selected by British Gymnastics for the five-person squad come next July include Jennifer Gadirova, part of the team that won silver last year and Olympic bronze at Tokyo 2020, Joe Fraser, the 2019 parallel bars gold medallist, and Giarnni Regini-Moran, the reigning floor world champion.
