Star Indian bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been named men’s ICC Player of the Month for June after leading India to victory at the T20 World Cup 2024, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Tuesday.
Bumrah, who was also adjudged as the Player of the Tournament at the T20 World Cup hosted in the West Indies and USA, edged out compatriot Rohit Sharma and Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz for the award.
“I am delighted to be named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for June. It’s a special honour for me following a memorable few weeks spent in the USA and West Indies. We have had a lot to celebrate as a team, and I’m delighted to be able to add this personal accolade to the list,” said Bumrah after winning the accolade.
“I want to thank my family, all of my teammates and coaches as well as the fans who have voted for me. Their support pushes me to compete at the best of my ability in national colours,” the Indian pacer added.
India won the T20 World Cup for the second time after beating South Africa in a thrilling final at Barbados. The 30-year-old Bumrah starred in the T20 World Cup-winning campaign with 15 wickets in eight matches at an astonishing average of 8.26 and an incredible economy rate of 4.17.
Bumrah began his impactful campaign with a spell of 2/6 against Ireland and helped India beat arch-rivals Pakistan with bowling figures of 3/14. He also picked up six wickets during the Super 8 stage and followed it up with a spell of 2/12 in India’s semi-final victory against England.
Bumrah also bowled a sensational spell of 2/18 in the final against the Proteas and helped India lift an ICC trophy for the first time in over a decade.
He became only the second Indian after Virat Kohli, who has won the award twice, to become the ICC men’s T20 Player of the Tournament.
