Dressed for success: Japan's official Tokyo 2020 uniforms unveiled

Japanese Olympians and Paralympians will don the same kit for the first time during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

The team's official uniforms were unveiled on Thursday (23 January) with the design paying homage to the outfits worn during Tokyo's last Games in 1964.

The Japanese delegation will march into the Opening Ceremony at the National Stadium in white tops and red bottoms, as they did 56 years ago, with red and white the two colours of the national flag..

The uniform was designed by Tokyo 2020 sponsor Aoki.

Swimmer Seto Daiya, who has already punched his ticket to the 2020 Olympic Games after winning the 200m and 400m individual medley at last year's FINA World Championships, was one of six athletes trying out the uniforms on Thursday.

Seto said he couldn't wait for the Games - which run from 24 July to 9 August - to start, adding that he loved being able to share the uniform with the Paralympians.

"We have less than 200 days to go until the Tokyo Olympics", said Seto, who won bronze in the 400 IM at Rio 2016. "Wearing the official uniform on this stage fires me up even more for the Games.

"To be sharing the same uniform (with the Paralympians) speaks volumes about how we're in this together. The Olympics are up first and I hope we can help create some momentum for the Paralympics by having a good Games."

Each and every Japanese athlete will have the uniform tailor-made to his or her liking.

Paralympic archer Ueyama Tomohiro was particularly grateful the uniforms will be custom made.

"During the Opening Ceremony when you're wearing a suit in a wheelchair, the sleeves get dirty because of the tyres", Ueyama said. "But the sleeves have been adjusted for the uniform I'm wearing so they stay clean, which is great".

Uniforms for Tokyo 2020 technical officials such as referees were also revealed with the design embracing environmental awareness and practicality.
