Janja Garnbret wins boulder and lead gold at IFSC Climbing World Champs

The top three women also obtained Olympic quota spots for Paris 2024

Olympic gold medallist Janja Garnbret of Slovenia won her eighth global title Friday (11 August 2023) at the 2023 IFSC World Championships in Bern, Switzerland.

Garnbret took the title in the women's boulder and lead finals with a combined score of 177.0, nearly 20 points of clear of second place's Jessica Pilz of Austria, who totalled 157.1. Pilz is the 2021 combined world champion.

Japan's Mori Ai, the lead champion in Bern, was the bronze medallist at 140.6.

All three obtained Olympic quota spots based on their finish.

The gold medal is the second of the championships for Garnbret, who won the bouldering title earlier in the event. Garnbret's other world titles are: 2016, lead; 2018, bouldering, combined; 2019, lead, bouldering, combined. She also owns to silver medals at the Worlds, having finished second in lead in 2018 and 2023.

As National Olympic Committees (NOC) have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games, athletes' participation at the Paris Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024.
