IWF World Weightlifting Championships 2023: Rosina Randafiarison praised after winning first-ever global medal in Olympic sport for Madagascar

The 23-year-old from Madagascar took three silver medals at the World Weightlifting Championships in the women’s 45kg competition.

Rosina Randafiarison made Malagasy sports history on Monday (4 September) at the 2023 IWF World Weightlifting Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

She screamed her joy out when it became official that she had secured a silver medal in the women’s 45kg competition in snatch, clean & jerk, and in the total score.

In the snatch, the Olympic Solidarity Scholarship holder completed her attempt with 77 kg and lifted 93 kg in clean & jerk, giving her a total score of 170 kg, an improvement of her career best by 14 kg.

“It’s the most beautiful story of my life. I thank everyone who contributed to this victory,” Randafiarison wrote on her Facebook page.

"It’s wonderful - we have never won a medal like this before, never in any sport," the President of the Madagascar Weightlifting Federation and general secretary of its National Olympic Committee, Alex Randriamanarivo said according to insidethegames.biz.

The women’s 45 kg competition was won by Sirivimon Pramongkhol of Thailand with a total of 179 kg. Türkiye’s Cansu Bektaş took third place, lifting a total of 162 kg.

The 2023 IWF World Weightlifting Championships is a mandatory qualifying event for Paris 2024 and concludes on 17 September.
