Ion Cornianu and Ladislau Simon 2023 wrestling: India finish campaign with four medals - winners list

Six Asian Games-bound Indian Greco Roman wrestlers competed at the Romania meet. Sunil Kumar bagged India’s only gold in the 87kg category.

Indian wrestlers won four medals - one gold and three bronze - at the Ion Cornianu and Ladislau Simon 2023 wrestling meet in Bucharest, Romania. The event began on August 18 and concluded on Sunday.

Greco Roman wrestler Sunil Kumar bagged India’s only gold medal in the 87kg category. The three bronze medals came through Narinder (Greco Roman 97kg), Neeraj (Greco Roman 67kg) and Vikas (Greco Roman 77kg).

The Ion Cornianu and Ladislau Simon 2023 wrestling meet comprised events in men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and Greco Roman categories. India, however, only fielded Greco Roman wrestlers in Bucharest.

The Indian entry list at the Ion Cornianu and Ladislau Simon 2023 featured six grapplers - Gyanendar (60kg), Neeraj (67kg), Vikas (77kg), Sunil Kumar (87kg), Narinder Cheema (97kg) and Naveen (130kg).

All six are part of the Indian wrestling team for the upcoming Asian Games 2023, scheduled in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China, from September 23 to October 8.   

The wrestlers were already in Romania for a special 15-day training camp for the Asian Games. Participation in the Ion Cornianu and Ladislau Simon 2023 was part of the preparatory tour, approved by the Indian sports ministry.
