The Punjab athlete clocked 2:02.57 seconds to win the two-lap race at NIS, Patiala on Sunday.
Harmilan Bains, one of India’s upcoming middle distance runners, put up a fine performance to win the women’s 800m title at the 60th Inter State Athletics Championships in Patiala on Sunday**.**
The Punjab runner clocked 2:02.57 seconds to win the gold medal while Delhi’s Chanda clinched the silver with 2:03.36 seconds. Sri Lanka’s Nimali Liyanaarachchi was third with a 2:05.69 second finish.
Ever since breaking into the scene at last year’s Khelo India University Games, the 23-year-old Harmilan Bains has shown steady progress in the limited opportunities that’ve come her way amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the Federation Cup earlier this year, Harmilan Bains clocked the second-fastest timing by an Indian in the 1500m. She has continued that form at the Inter State meet at NIS Patiala.
Harmilan Bains -- daughter of former middle-distance runner Amandeep Bains and Asian Games silver medallist Madhuri Singh -- broke away from the pack early and led most of the race.
On Sunday, India’s leading quarter milers Muhammed Anas, Amoj Jacob, Arokia Rajiv and Noah Nirmal Tom skipped the men’s 400m heats to focus on making the Tokyo Olympics cut in the 4x400m relay on Tuesday.
