The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League starts with a clash between defending champions Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday. All IPL 2024 matches will be available to watch on live streaming and TV in India.

Like last year, 10 cricket teams will take part in this year’s IPL.

Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are the most successful teams in IPL history with both winning five titles each. Kolkata Knight Riders are two-time winners while Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gujarat Titans have won the competition once each.

Delhi Capitals, the recently rechristened Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings have been in the IPL since the inaugural season in 2008 while Lucknow Super Giants are the latest entrants in the league along with Titans, having made their debut two seasons back.

The 10 IPL teams are divided into two groups of five each. Each team will play two matches against all five teams in the other group and once against all four teams in the same group. All teams play seven home and seven away games in the group stage which is held in a round-robin format.

Following the group stage, the top four teams on the basis of aggregate points progress to the playoffs. The sides that finish inside the top two play the first Qualifier where the winner progresses directly to the final.

The teams that finish third and fourth after the group stage take part in the Eliminator and the winner of that fixture faces the loser of the first Qualifier for a spot in the final.

The IPL 2024 final is expected to be held in late May. However, the complete schedule of the tournament is yet to come out.

MS Dhoni, who led CSK to their fifth IPL title last season, however, won’t be leading the Yellow Brigade this time around. Ruturaj Gaikwad will captain the five-time champions.

Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who had captained Titans to consecutive finals, including winning the competition in 2022, has returned to Mumbai Indians, where he will be taking over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma.

Both Dhoni and Rohit have five IPL triumphs under their belt as captains. Gujarat Titans have decided to appoint Shubman Gill as Hardik’s successor.

Virat Kohli will also be seen playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru after an extended personal break recently. Delhi Capitals’ Rishabh Pant will return to cricket for the first time since a near-fatal car crash in December 2022.
