Rio 2016 silver medallist PV Sindhu will be India’s best hope of a third Olympic medal in badminton at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The reigning world champion created a stir with an unexpected silver medal on her Olympics debut in Rio 2016. This time around, PV Sindhu is seeded sixth in the women’s singles and is considered one of the medal favourites.
PV Sindhu is drawn in Group J in the women’s singles and she will open her campaign against Israel’s Ksenia Polikarpova on Sunday (July 25). Sindhu’s second Group J opponent is Cheung Ngan Yi of Hong Kong.
If she tops her pool, PV Sindhu could face Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt in the Round of 16 and subsequently set up a quarter-final clash with home favourite Akane Yamaguchi.
Meanwhile, in the men’s singles B Sai Praneeth will play in Group D. He will make his Olympic debut against Misha Zilberman of Israel on Saturday (July 24) and will later face Dutchman Mark Caljouw in Group D.
The young men’s doubles pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy have been handed a tough campaign on their Olympics debut. They will take on Chinese Taipei’s Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin in Group A on Saturday.
Chirag-Satwik will later face top-seeded Indonesians Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo/Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Great Britain’s Ben Lane/Sean Vendy in the group stages.
