Badminton: Who has enjoyed most success at the Olympics?

Badminton events made its debut at the Barcelona 1992 Games. Four events - men's and women's - were a part of the initial Olympic programme. However, in Atlanta 1996 Games, the mixed doubles event was added to the list.

China has been the powerhouse in badminton since its inception into the Games. The country has also produced some fine shuttlers like double Olympic gold medallist Lin Dan, Rio 2016 Olympics champion Chen Long and two-time Olympic gold medallist Zhang Ning.

Indonesia and South Korea have also been consistent in their pursuit of Olympic medals. India, meanwhile, has clinched two medals at the Olympics.

Who has won the most Olympic badminton medals?

Given their proud history in the sport, it is small wonder that representatives of the Chinese Olympic Committee have stepped up on the podium the most.

Over the course of seven editions of the Games, a medal has been won by a Chinese shuttler no less than 41 times.

Nine Chinese shuttlers have won an Olympic gold in Badminton twice, including the legendary Gao Ling, Lin Dan and Fu Haifeng.

Athletes from Indonesia and South Korea have enjoyed similar amounts of success since the sport's inception at Olympic level back in 1992.

It must be noted that only South Korea's Kim Dong-moon has won an Olympic gold twice in Badminton apart from the Chinese shuttlers. Gil Young-ah has also won three medals for South Korea in Olympics.

Indonesia have also done well, with the likes of Susi Sasanti and Taufik Hidayat impressing at the Games.

How many medals have India won in Badminton?

India have won two medals in Badminton, through Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu.

While Saina won a bronze at London 2012, prevailing over Wang Xin in the bronze medal play-off, with the Chinese shuttler withdrawing due to an injury.

Sindhu went one better in Rio four years later, storming all the way to the final before falling to Spain's Carolina Marin. But that run was enough to get her a silver medal.

How many Indians will compete in badminton at Tokyo 2020?

India will field a total of four badminton players across three events at Tokyo 2020. B Sai Praneeth will lead India's charge in the men's singles event while Rio 2016 silver medallist PV Sindhu will represent the country in women's singles. The pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy will, meanwhile, contest in the men's doubles event.

Sindhu will carry the hopes of the nation to add another medal to their tally at Tokyo 2020. She has been seeded sixth in the marquee event and will look to go one better than her performance at Rio 2016.

The badminton events will run from July 24 to August 2 at the Musashino Forest Sports Plaza in Tokyo.
