Tanvi Patri became the third Indian shuttler to be crowned the Asian U-15 champion after she claimed the title at the Badminton Asia U-17 & U-15 Championships 2024 in Chengdu, the People’s Republic of China on Sunday.

The 14-year-old Indian top seed defeated second seed Nguyen 22-20, 21-11 in 34 minutes to clinch the title without dropping a single game throughout the tournament.

Samiya Imad Farooqui (2017) and Tasnim Mir (2019) were the previous Asian U-15 girls badminton champions from India.

In the final, Tanvi took some time to find her rhythm. Trailing 17-11 in the opening game, she kept her composure and a series of unforced errors from her opponent allowed the Indian to close the gap and pocket the first game.

The Vietnamese shuttler was no match for Tanvi in the second game as she clinched the final in decisive fashion.

In the semi-finals, Tanvi Patri registered a dominating 21-19, 21-10 win over sixth-seed Kungkaew Kakanik of Thailand in just 31 minutes.

India returned with two medals from the Badminton Asia U-17 & U-15 Championships 2024.

Gnana Dattu bagged a bronze medal in the boy's U-17 singles category after he went down to Indonesia’s Radithya Bayu Wardhana 9-21, 21-13, 21-13 in the semi-finals.

India had sent a squad of 39 players to the Badminton Asia U-17 & U-15 Championships 2024.

In the last edition of the championships, held in the same city, India had bagged one gold, one silver and one bronze with Bornil Changmai standing atop the U-15 boy’s singles podium.
