The fourth Winter Youth Olympic Games, Gangwon 2024, are almost upon us – and the puck is about to be dropped.
With every winter sport on the current Olympic programme set to be contested in the Republic of Korea, ice hockey will once again be one of the keenly watched sports.
From 20 to 31 January 2024, the Gangneung Hockey Centre will host 28 teams across four events.
Discover what you should know about the ice hockey tournaments in Gangwon and how you can watch live on Olympics.com and the official Olympics app.
Which countries have qualified for ice hockey at Gangwon 2024?
Here are the 28 teams that will play across the four events in Gangwon. Hosts Republic of Korea is the only nation to be represented in more than one event.
- Men's six-team: USA, Czechia, Slovakia; Canada, Finland, Republic of Korea (in two groups)
- Women's six-team: Sweden, Japan, Norway; Switzerland, Germany, France (in two groups)
- Men's 3-on-3: Denmark, Latvia, Austria, Poland, Kazakhstan, Great Britain, Spain, Chinese Taipei (single group)
- Women's 3-on-3: Hungary, Italy, Republic of Korea, Netherlands, Australia, People's Republic of China, Türkiye, Mexico (single group)
Ice hockey format at Gangwon 2024
There are four events being contested at Gangwon 2024: men's and women's 3-on-3, and men's and women's 6-team tournaments (which feature the more traditional five skaters and one goaltender per team).
In each 3-on-3 tournament, the eight teams are in single groups and two matches will be played at the same time in each end-zone of the rink, with matches being played cross-ice. Players will play three periods of 16 minutes, with two-minute intervals.
The six-team tournament will be played with standard rules with two modifications: at the last Youth Olympics Lausanne 2020, teams played three 15-minute periods (instead of 20 at more senior levels) with no overtime, and minor penalties last for 90 seconds rather than the usual two minutes. The six teams in each tournament are split into two groups of three.
In all four events, three points will be awarded for a win in regulation play, two for a win after a penalty shot shoot-out, and one for losing in a penalty shot shoot-out, with the top four teams (top two per group in the six-team tournaments) qualify for the semi-finals.
Ice hockey venue location and dates at Gangwon 2024
All ice hockey games will be played at the Gangneung Hockey Centre, which also hosted ice hockey during the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018.
The 3-on-3 tournament takes place from 20 January to 25 January, with the six-team tournament lasting from 27 January to 31 January.
Ice hockey: Teams/Athletes to watch at Gangwon 2024
In the men's six-team tournament, Canada are always an outfit to watch and their Ruck twins - Liam and Markus - are two forwards set for big things.
The pair turn 16 on 21 February with both selected in the first round of May's Western Hockey League Prospects Draft by the Medicine Hat Tigers.
In the Canadian Sport School Hockey League, Liam led all scorers with 90 points (53 goals, 37 assists) in just 27 games. Markus was second with 87 points (22 goals, 65 assists) as the pair linked up to devastating effect for Okanagan Hockey Academy.
For the United States, JP Hurlbert is coming off an incredible season for the Dallas Stars Elite Under-14 side. Texas may not be known as a hockey hotbed, but Hurlbert is rated as one of the best prospects in North America after tallying 202 points (118 goals, 84 assists) in 79 games.
