I-League fixtures: Sudeva Delhi vs Mohammedan Sporting to kickstart 2021 season

The 2021 I-League season will get underway with debutants Sudeva Delhi FC clashing with Mohammedan Sporting at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake) Stadium, Kolkata on January 9, 2021.

The I-League 2021 fixtures until February 24 (round 10) were released by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) last month.

I-League 2021 will be played at three venues - the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium (VYBK), and the Kishore Bharati Krirangan (KBK) in Kolkata, and the Kalyani Municipal Stadium in neighbouring town Kalyani. No fans will be allowed in the stadiums.

Apart from the opening fixture, there will be two more matches – Punjab FC vs Aizawl FC and Gokulam Kerala FC vs Chennai City FC – on Day 1 January 9. Football fans in India can watch the I-League matches on live streaming.

Two-time I-League champions Churchill Brothers begin their 2021 season against AIFF development side Indian Arrows on January 10.

Churchill Brothers are currently the most successful side in the I-League after two-time champions Mohun Bagan shifted to the Indian Super League after merging with ATK. East Bengal have also made the switch to the ISL this season.

Mohun Bagan and East Bengal have been replaced by Mohammedan Sporting, who won the I-League qualifiers to make the competition, and Sudeva Delhi FC won a direct corporate entry to the league.

The I-League will also have a new competition format this season. The 11 participating teams will play each other once before being divided into two groups for the second half of the season.

The top six teams will be grouped together and will play against each other once again. The team with most points after the 15 matches (10+5) will be crowned champions. The champion team will earn a spot in the AFC Cup 2022 group stage.

The other five teams, meanwhile, will play against each other in a relegation stage where the team with the lowest points (cumulative points collected from all 14 matches) will be relegated to the 2021-22 2nd Division League.
