Malvika Bansod progressed to the second round of the Hylo Open 2023 badminton women’s singles event while the women’s doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa-Tanisha Crasto crashed out in the first round in Saarbrucken, Germany on Tuesday.
Malvika Bansod, 50th in the badminton rankings, received a walkover from Belgium’s world No. 41 Lianne Tan and will take on the winner of the match between Ireland’s Rachael Darragh and Brazil’s J Vieira next. Both of Malvika Bansod’s potential opponents are ranked below the Indian badminton player.
Veteran Ashwini Ponnappa bowed out of the Hylo Open after losing the opening round of the women’s doubles alongside Tanisha Crasto at the Saarlandhalle indoor arena.
Ashwini Ponnappa-Tanisha Crasto, world No. 31, claimed their first BWF title as a pair at the Abu Dhabi Masters earlier this month but lost to world No. 17 Indonesian pair of Febriana Kusuma and Amallia Pratiwi 21-15, 21-18 in 48 minutes in Germany.
Tanisha Crasto will also be in action with Sai Prateek in the mixed doubles.
Meanwhile, Aakarshi Kashyap, who has not had a best of the 2023 badminton season, suffered another opening-round defeat in Germany. The world No. 38 Indian shuttler lost to Spain’s Clara Azurmendi 21-13, 21-16 in 29 minutes to crash out.
Kiran George, who made it to the semi-finals of the Abu Dhabi Masters earlier this month and won the first Indonesia Masters BWF Super 100 event in September, will be in action in the men’s singles event alongside Mithun Manjunath and S Subramanian on Wednesday. Rutuparna Panda-Swetaparna Panda will take the badminton courts in the women’s doubles event.
Results at the Hylo Open 2023, a BWF Super 300 event, will count towards qualifying rankings for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
