Indian women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for her poor behaviour in a recent One Day International (ODI) match against Bangladesh.
During the third ODI against Bangladesh in Dhaka on Saturday, Harmanpreet Kaur was unhappy at an umpiring decision that led to her dismissal.
After she was adjudged caught at slip off the bowling of Nahida Akter for 14 runs, Harmanpreet Kaur expressed her frustration by hitting the wickets with her bat. Later, she went on to criticise the umpiring during the presentation ceremony. The ICC noted it as two separate breaches of its Code of Conduct.
The breaches covered "showing dissent at an umpire’s decision” and “public criticism in relation to an incident occurring in an international match."
As a result of the suspension, Harmanpreet Kaur will miss the first two matches of the Asian Games cricket tournament in Hangzhou in September-October.
Deputy Smriti Mandhana is expected to lead the Indian women’s cricket team at the Asian Games in the absence of Harmanpreet Kaur.
India’s third ODI against Bangladesh ended in a tie, and the three-match series ended 1-1. Bangladesh had won the series-opener, registering their first victory over India in women’s ODI cricket.
Bangladesh finished runners-up at the Asian Games women’s cricket tournament in the two editions the sport featured at the continental event – Guangzhou 2010 and Incheon 2014. Pakistan won the women’s Asian Games cricket tournament on both occasions.
