Hanyu Yuzuru is bringing together Olympic superstars.
The two-time Olympic gold medallist in figure skating debuted his much-anticipated 'notte stellata' show alongside Jason Brown and Olympic champion artistic gymnast Uchimura Kohei on Friday (10 March) in Hanyu's home prefecture of Miyagi.
Two more shows are set for the weekend, with Hanyu's self-produced ice show marking the first time he's collaborated with an ensemble cast. Since his retirement from competitive skating, Hanyu has done solo shows 'Prologue' and 'Gift', while 'notte stellata' reflects on and honours the Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent tsunami as it marks its 12th anniversary, having occurred on 11 March 2011.
Also starring in the show are Hanyu's show in addition to Brown and Uchimura are his former choreographer Shae-Lynn Bourne, as well as fellow Japanese skaters Miyahara Satoko, Suzuki Akiko, Tanaka Keiji, Mura Takahito and Hongo Rika.
Uchimura, the Olympic All-Around champion at both London 2012 and Rio 2016, performed a gymnastics routine just to the side of the ice, he and Hanyu performing as a duo - Uchimura tumbling on the floor to a makeshift pommel horse with Hanyu on the ice.
Hanyu, in an ode to Uchimura, performed a cartwheel as he took to the ice.
The show performed to a sellout crowd in Sendai, the capital city in Miyagi Prefecture.
