The 2023 World University Games in Chengdu, China, will feature a clash of gymnastics’ men’s all-around titans as 2021 World all-around champion Zhang Boheng and Tokyo 2020 Olympic all-around champion Hashimoto Daiki are set to compete. Hashimoto is also the reigning world all-around champion.

Since the Tokyo 2020 Games in 2021, in which Zhang did not compete, the duo has traded global all-around titles, with Zhang besting Hashimoto by just .017 in 2021.

A year ago, Hashimoto came out on top with a margin of .433.

According to the men’s gymnastics blog Neutral Deductions, Zhang will be joined by Olympic parallel bars champion Zou Jingyuan, Shi Cong, Su Weide, and Lan Xingyu.

Olympic medallist Kaya Kazuma, Minami Kazuki, Sugimoto Kaiyoto, and Shohei Kawakami round out the Japanese roster.

Competition in Chengdu begins on 1 August with the team final and individual qualification round. The men’s all-around final is set for Friday, 4 August.

Brian Carey, father to Olympic floor champion Jade Carey, named assistant coach at Oregon State University

Oregon State University’s women’s gymnastics team announced 24 July that Brian Carey, father of Olympic floor exercise gold medallist Jade Carey (a rising junior at the school), will serve as an assistant coach for the squad.

"I am excited to announce the addition of Brian Carey to our coaching staff," head coach Tanya Chaplin said, according to a press release. "Brian is a world-class coach and will be an amazing mentor to our student-athletes. His technical knowledge, alongside his work with both the international and elite developmental programs will benefit our athletes immediately."

Jade Carey, who last competed in elite gymnastics at the 2022 Worlds, where she helped Team USA to a sixth-straight team gold medal before claiming vault gold individually, is set to compete at the upcoming U.S. Classic (5 August) outside Chicago.

The 23-year-old, who is coached by her father in elite gymnastics, had previously indicated that she would remain at Oregon State as she attempts to make a second, consecutive U.S. Olympic team.
