Lee Zii Jia will enjoy a rare tournament as the top seed when the BWF Badminton World Tour season resumes on Tuesday (7 March) in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany, for the 2023 German Open.
The world number 4 will look to get his season back on the right track, having not made it past the round of 16 at each of his last five World Tour events dating back to 2022.
That poor run of form has seen the Malaysian lose his world number 2 ranking, but with none of the three players in front of him competing in Mülheim, Lee will take top billing in Germany.
He enters the tournament having won two and lost one of his three singles matches at the recent 2023 Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championship, at which Malaysia was eliminated in the quarter-finals.
The 26-year-old's top seeding means he will open his campaign against a qualifier, before a potential banana skin against another former world number 2 who has struggled recently in Denmark's Anders Antonsen.
After suffering a first-round exit at his home event, the Malaysia Open, the 26-year-old needs to correct his continued run of inconsistent form if he is to solidify his world number two men's singles ranking, as he says he wants to do.
Thailand's world number 7 Kunlavut Vitidsarn is the second seed in the other half of the draw.
