Eleven shuttlers, including two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, will be representing India at the French Open 2024 badminton tournament, which gets underway on Tuesday.
A BWF Super 750 event, the French Open will be held at the Porte de la Chapelle Arena, which will also host the badminton events at the Paris 2024 Olympics later this year.
All eyes will be on PV Sindhu who will mark her return to the BWF World Tour in Paris when she faces Canada’s Michelle Li in the opening round of women’s singles.
The 28-year-old Sindhu only recently came back from a long injury layoff with a spectacular performance at the Badminton Asia Team Championships in Malaysia, guiding the Indian women’s team to a historic gold medal.
In the final against Thailand, Sindhu outclassed world No. 17 Supanida Katethong 21-12, 21-12 to help India win the tie 3-2. Ironically, it was in the round of 16 clash with Katethong at last year’s French Open that Sindhu suffered a knee injury that would sideline her for nearly four months.
The world No. 1 men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will also be competing in Paris. The Indian duo won the French Open title in 2022 and finished runners-up in 2019. However, they suffered a pre-quarterfinal loss against Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan last year. Satwik-Chirag will take on Malaysia’s Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi in the round of 32.
In the men’s singles category, Indian badminton players will have been handed difficult draws. Priyanshu Rajawat begins his French Open campaign against world No. 1 Viktor Axelsen while Kidambi Srikanth, the 2017 champion, will be up against world No. 14 Chou Tien Chen.
Lakshya Sen is set to face Japan’s Kanta Tsuneyama, the 2021 French Open winner, and HS Prannoy, India’s best-ranked singles player at world No. 7, will take on the People’s Republic of China’s Lu Guang Zu, the runners-up from last year’s China Open.
The two Indian women’s doubles pairs of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand and Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Castro will have to face each other in the opening match of the women’s doubles. Both pairs are in a race to make the cut for Paris 2024.
The French Open 2024 offers qualifying ranking points to shuttlers for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The qualification window for badminton started on May 1 last year.
