In a battle of the old guard vs new blood, two-time champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia will face 20-year-old world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz of Spain in the French Open 2023 men’s singles semi-finals in Paris on Friday. The tennis match will be live streamed in India.
A win will take the 36-year-old Novak Djokovic a step closer to his 23rd Grand Slam title. The Serb is tied with Rafael Nadal at 22 Majors each, the record of most Grand Slam wins by a men’s singles player. A title win at French Open would also see world No. 3 Novak Djokovic return to world No. 1 in the ATP Rankings.
However, Nadal’s compatriot Carlos Alcaraz, dubbed the next big thing in tennis, will be a tough opponent to beat. Alcaraz and Djokovic met at the ATP Masters 1000 Madrid semi-final in Spain last year. Alcaraz won the three-set contest on clay.
Carlos Alcaraz won the US Open last year but missed the Australian Open 2023 due to an injury.
En route to the semi-finals, Carlos Alcaraz got the better of fifth seed and 2021 French Open finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece 6-2, 6-1, 7-6(5). He has dropped just one set in his five matches at Roland Garros this year.
Novak Djokovic also has dropped just one set from his five matches at French Open this year. The Serbian legend comes into the semi-final contest with a 4-6, 7-6(0), 6-2, 6-4 win over world No. 11 Karen Kachanov.
In the other men’s singles semi-finals, world No. 4 Casper Ruud of Norway will face world No. 27 Alexander Zverev of Germany.
The women’s singles semi-finals at the French Open 2023, to be played on Thursday, features defending women’s singles champion and former Youth Olympic Games champion Iga Swiatek of Poland and Australian Open winner and No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus.
While Iga Swiatek will be up against world No. 14 Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil, Aryna Sabalenka will face unseeded Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic.
The French Open 2023 will conclude on June 11.
