French Open 2023, the second Grand Slam of the year, will see Serbian tennis great Novak Djokovic chase a record 23rd major in the absence of ‘King of Clay’ Rafael Nadal at the iconic Roland Garros Stadium. The main draw of the French Open starts from Sunday. Matches will be live streamed.

Standing in Djokovic’s way, however, will be Nadal’s Spanish compatriot Carlos Alcaraz, who is currently world No. 1 in the ATP rankings. World No. 3 Djokovic, seeded third, is pitted in the same half as Alcaraz. The two tennis players met at the ATP Masters 1000 Madrid semi-final in Spain last year. Alcaraz beat the two-time French Open champion in three sets.

Former US Open champion and world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev and upcoming Danish star world No. 6 Holger Rune will be the players to watch out for in the other half of the draw along with 2022 French Open finalist and world No. 4 Casper Ruud.

Last year’s champion Rafael Nadal, who has won a record 14 Grand Slam titles on the clay courts of Paris, will be missing from the French Open for the first time since 2004 due to injury.

Nadal and Djokovic, with 22 tennis majors each, are currently tied for the record of most Grand Slam wins by a men’s singles player.

Defending women’s singles champion and former Youth Olympic Games gold medallist Iga Swiatek of Poland, meanwhile, will look to become the first woman since Serena Williams to win three French Open titles. She won the 2020 edition despite being unseeded and beat young US star Coco Gauff in the final last year.

Iga Swiatek’s challengers at Roland Garros 2023 will be Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan and Australian Open winner Aryna Sabalenka.

Former world No.1 Victoria Azarenka, 2021 French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic and last year’s finalist Coco Gauff will be the other top contenders.

Indian tennis players at French Open 2023

Ankita Raina, an Asian Games bronze medallist, was the only Indian player to take part in the French Open 2023 singles competition.

The Indian tennis player, world No. 212, began from the qualifiers and got the better of world No. 393 French wildcard Emeline Dartron 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 in the first round of the qualifiers but was defeated by world No. 145 Moyuka Uchijima of Japan 7(7)-6(1), 6-1 in the second round.

In-form Rohan Bopanna, who climbed up to world No. 9 in doubles rankings, will team up with his Australian Matthew Ebden in men’s doubles.

Rohan Bopanna won the mixed doubles title at French Open 2017 with Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski. His participation in mixed doubles this year is yet to be confirmed.

The all-Indian pair of Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni will also be in fray in the men’s doubles competition.

The French Open 2023 will conclude on June 11.
