We are down to the final four footballing nations in League A of the inaugural UEFA Women’s Nations League.

France, Netherlands, Germany and Spain have all seen off fierce competition to qualify for the semi-finals which are set to take place on Friday 23rd February.

World Champions Spain will come up against the Netherlands in Seville at Estadio de La Cartuja, whilst France host Germany in Lyon at the Groupama Stadium.

Whilst the sides will be keen to get their hands on the maiden Women’s Nations League trophy, they will have their sights set on a slightly different accomplishment.

Not only do the winners of each semi-final fixture go onto compete in the Women’s Nations League final, they will also gain qualification to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games this summer.

As France have already qualified as host nation, should they reach the Women’s Nations League final, the two Paris 2024 spots will go to the other finalist and the winner of the third-place play-off.

UEFA Women's Nations League: Spain v Netherlands

Reigning world champions, Spain, will go head-to-head with the 2017 European Champions, Netherlands, for a spot in the Women’s Nations League final and a place at this summer’s Olympic Games.

The two sides last met in the quarter-finals of the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, when Spain overcame the Dutch in dramatic fashion. Stefanie van der Gragt’s equaliser forced the game into extra-time, but it was Spain’s Salma Paralluelo who made all the headlines with her 111th minute winner.

As champions of the world, Spain head into the game as favourites. However, the Netherlands will take confidence from last summer’s quarter-final display, aware of their ability to push Spain to the very edge.

UEFA Women's Nations League: France v Germany

It was less than two years ago that Germany denied France a major final, beating them 2-1 in England at the 2022 European Championships thanks to an Alexandra Popp brace. The Germans went onto lose the final to eventual winners England, but were triumphant over France once again just months later in a friendly fixture.

However, the Germans came into the Women’s Nations League off the back of a poor 2023 Women’s World Cup campaign and so the pressure to qualify for this summer’s Olympic Games is on.

France are currently unbeaten in the Women’s Nations League, whereas Germany suffered a 2-0 loss to Denmark on matchday one. The French have also already gained entry to Paris 2024 as the host nation, whereas Germany are yet to qualify.
