Four-time world champions the United States will host the People's Republic of China in back-to-back friendlies on home soil on 2 and 6 December 2023.
It is reported that USWNT interim coach Twila Kilgore crafted her squad selection for this international break with the help of future boss Emma Hayes.
In November 2023, it was announced that Chelsea manager Hayes would become the new USWNT head coach from the summer of 2024.
The Englishwoman, who formerly coached NWSL side Chicago Red Stars, will officially take charge two months prior to Paris 2024 following the end of the European domestic season.
“So there’s a provisional roster that comes out first, which I prepared,” Kilgore told the media. “I was able to share my ideas with Emma, [Emma was] able to share her ideas with me and we picked this roster collaboratively and we will do so moving forward.”
As Hayes finishes her final season in charge at Chelsea in the Women’s Super League, she will work closely with Kilgore who was assistant to previous coach Vlatko Andonovski.
Sophia Smith and Trinity Rodman are among the headline names in the 26-player camp which will be reduced to 23 for the two fixtures.
A number of veteran players including Alex Morgan, Alyssa Naeher and Becky Sauerbrunn, were missing from Hayes and Kilgore’s joint roster with fans dubbing the squad a ‘new-look’ USWNT.
USWNT v China: Head to head
These two sides have met no fewer than 58 times since their first clash in July 1986. Only Canada have played the USWNT more times in international women's football.
USA have been victorious in 36 of those encounters with 13 ending in draws and China winning nine times.
Their most famous match was the 1999 Women’s World Cup Final when Brandi Chastain scored the decisive penalty in the shoot-out as the USWNT claimed their second world crown.
The two nations last met in June 2018 when USA won 2-1 in Cleveland, Ohio thanks to goals from Megan Rapinoe and Tobin Heath.
That was the second of back-to-back friendlies with the hosts winning four days earlier thanks to Morgan's solitary strike in Sandy, Utah.
China's Steel Roses recently made the semi-finals of the Asian Games on home soil, losing out 4-3 to Japan before crushing Uzbekistan 7-0 to take third place. That was after failing to make it out of their group at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.
After crashing out of this year's World Cup on penalties to Sweden, the USWNT went on an unbeaten run during the Pan American Games. They then lost 2-1 to hosts Chile in the semi-finals before overcoming Argentina 2-0 in the third-place playoff.
