The Indian women’s hockey team’s dreams of making it to the upcoming Summer Games in Paris hinges on the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers 2024, scheduled in Ranchi, Jharkhand from January 13 to 19.
The top three hockey teams from the eight-nation tournament will earn a spot at the Paris 2024 Olympics, which will be held in France in July and August this year. The FIH Women’s Hockey Olympic Qualifiers 2024 will be live streamed and live telecast in India.
The eight teams competing at the FIH Women’s Hockey Olympic Qualifiers 2024 have been divided into two groups of four teams each. India are in Pool B.
FIH Women’s Hockey Olympic Qualifiers 2024 teams
Pool A: Germany, Japan, Chile, Czech Republic
Pool B: India, New Zealand, Italy, United States
After the round-robin matches in the group stage, the top two teams from each pool will qualify for the semi-finals. The finalists will be assured of a top-two finish and thereby, qualify for next year’s Olympic Games.
The losing semi-finalists will play the bronze medal match, with the winner also securing their ticket to Paris 2024.
India will open their campaign against the USA on January 13.
All matches will be played at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astroturf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi. India will have fond memories of the venue, having won the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy here last year.
Goalkeeper Savita Punia will captain the Indian side while Nikki Pradhan will be her deputy. India will be without the services of Vandana Katariya after the veteran striker suffered a cheekbone fracture in the lead-up to the tournament.
At world No. 6, India are the second-best ranked team in the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers 2024 after Germany, who are one place above them.
