Korean figure skating legend Yuna Kim has traded in her skates for high fashion.
A collection of hanbok, a traditional Korean costume, designed by the 32-year-old two-time Olympic medallist in conjunction with ten hanbok design houses, featured in a runway show that took place yesterday evening (27 September) at Korean Cultural Center in London.
The London Fashion Week show, entitled “Hanbok Fashion Show, The Hanbok Wave", shone a spotlight on the glamour and grace of the hanbok and was in part inspired by the famed elegance of the immensely popular figure skater.
A video of the event will now appear on the exhibition website for “Hallyu! The Korean Wave” at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the world’s largest museum of applied arts, decorative arts and design in the world.
The hanbok worn by Kim will also feature in a photoshoot with renowned French fashion magazine Marie Claire. And later this year, a video from the shoot will be displayed on the Broadway billboards in Times Square in New York City.
Being the centre of attention and revered for her grace is nothing new for 'Queen' Kim.
The figure skater became an icon in her country after she won women’s singles gold at the 2010 Games in Vancouver and then silver four years later at Sochi 2014.
Since then, she has taken on several ambassadorial roles including lighting the Olympic cauldron to the open the 2018 Winter Games in PyeongChang as well as more recently, become an official ambassador for the upcoming Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon 2024.
