There are just two more games to go at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.

Sunday (20 August) will see Spain and England contest the final – before that, though, both Sweden and Australia are set to go head-to-head in the third-place match on Saturday (19 August) at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

It can be difficult to pick yourself up after a gutting semi-final loss for one more game, but there is still plenty to play for.

For the European side, it is a chance to equal their result from the 2019 edition, held in France, where they beat England 2-1 to finish third behind runners-up the Netherlands and eventual champions the USA.

Australia, meanwhile, have already made history.

Three times in the past, the Matildas have fallen at the quarter-final stage, but that changed against France. In one of the most extraordinary penalty shootouts in the history of the competition, which saw 20 spot kicks taken, they booked their spot in the semi-final.

Despite losing 3-1 to England in the last four, Australia had not only guaranteed their best-ever finish but have inspired a nation and cemented their legacy.

After missing the opening stages of the tournament through injury, the Matildas can rely on their talismanic captain Sam Kerr to help them in their final World Cup game.

The Chelsea forward scored her first goal of the tournament – and perhaps a contender for the best at Australia & New Zealand 2023 – against the Lionesses, and will no doubt be fired up to help her nation end on a high.

One Swede, meanwhile, may have their eye on pipping Japan’s Hinata Miyazawa to the Golden Boot award on Saturday.

An unlikely contender for the award, centre-back Amanda Ilestedt needs a goal and an assist to equal the Japanese international, or a brace in their final game to move clear in the top scorer charts. The co-hosts will have to keep an eye on the defender on set pieces specifically.
