Colombia produced the shock of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 so far, beating Germany 2-1 on Sunday (30 July).

The Germans were one of the pre-tournament favourites and came into this match on a high after thrashing Morocco 6-0 in their opener.

But it was Colombia who took the lead, Cancer-survivor Linda Caicedo with a stunning chip into the top corner after 52 minutes, her second goal of the tournament.

The two-time women's world football champions Germany hit back, equallising from the penalty spot in the final minute of normal time through Alexandra Popp.

But Colombia weren't finished, and seven minutes into injury time Manuela Vanegas headed home a winner to seal a historic 2-1 win that leaves them on the verge of a spot in the knockout stages. Anything other than a heavy defeat to Morocco will see the Colombians reach the last 16.

Defeat for Germany means the European nation must beat South Korea in their final group match to guarantee their progress.
