Feryal Abdelaziz becomes first Egyptian woman to win Olympic gold

Feryal Abdelaziz victory in the women's kumite +61kg has seen her become the first ever woman from Egypt to win an Olympic gold medal at the Nippon Budokan.

The win comes after Giana Farouk took bronze in the -61kg kumite yesterday (6 August).

As the last minute ticked down, neither karateka had managed to score a point until Abdelaziz scored consecutive yuko's with less than 30 seconds on the board.

Tension was high for Zaretska as the reining -68kg kumite European champion tried to find the right combination to clinch the gold medal but it was too late as her spinning kick came after time had ended.

The 22-year-old Egyptian fell to the tatami as she realised she had been crowned the inaugural Olympic champion in the women's +61kg kumite.

"I can't describe my feeling, I am very, very happy," Abdelaziz said."I am very tired for four years and after the four years God said to me, 'it's the gold and you deserve it'.

"I can't believe it but my dream came true and I can't describe my feelings really."

Bronze went to People's Republic of China's GONG Li and Kazakhstan's Sofya Berultseva.
