For the 20th time in their respective football histories, the world will watch on as the United States Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT) takes on England.
It marks a Wembley homecoming for USA head coach Emma Hayes, who returns to the managerial dugout on English soil for the first time since leaving Chelsea earlier this year.
She is looking to continue her unbeaten streak since taking the reins of the USA in June – the kind of form that saw her team win Olympic gold at Paris 2024.
England’s mixed bag of form, meanwhile, will be the catalyst for them wanting to record a rare, statement victory over the Americans in London on Saturday (30 November).
Results have been good for Sarina Wiegman’s side, barring a seven-goal thriller against Germany which they lost 4-3, but the style of their play has raised questions about whether or not they can continue challenging for major honours.
It may be a friendly encounter between the two, but it will be anything but when they go head-to-head once again.
England vs. USWNT: When was the last time these two met?
Saturday marks the second time in just over two years that these two sides will contest a friendly game on the famous green grass of Wembley.
The last time they locked horns was in October 2022, and the English side—still on the high of winning the Euros some months earlier—recorded a rare victory over the USA.
All three goals were scored in an action-packed first half, with Lauren Hemp opening the scoring in front of home fans.
American striker Sophia Smith pulled things level just before the half-hour mark, but parity would last just five minutes as Georgia Stanway restored England’s lead from the penalty spot.
The 2-1 victory was just the fifth time the Lionesses have been on the winning side of this fixture.
England vs. USWNT head-to-head: Americans hold the upper hand
Once the most dominant force in world football, it will come as little surprise that England is yet another opponent the USA now holds the upper hand over, when it comes to their head-to-head record.
In 19 previous meetings between the pair, the Americans have suffered defeat on five occasions.
Two draws have been contested, while the US side have recorded 12 wins.
Before that 2022 showdown, the USA won comfortably 2-0 in the SheBelieves Cup two years prior. They also recorded an all-important victory en route to winning the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup, knocking the Lionesses out in the semi-final with a 2-1 win.
In another SheBelieves installment months earlier, their competitive encounter ended 2-2.
With plenty of history and pride at stake, Saturday could be an epic occasion.
