The Durand Cup 2022 starts on Tuesday with reigning champions FC Goa facing off against last year’s runner-ups Mohammedan Sporting at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) in Kolkata.
Started in 1888, the Durand Cup is the oldest football tournament in India and Asia whilst also being one of the oldest active domestic football competitions in the world. The 2022 edition will be the 131st time Durand Cup will be played.
Durand Cup 2022 will see 20 teams, 11 from the Indian Super League (ISL), five from the I-League and four Armed Forces teams, vie for the historic trophy.
The teams have been divided into four groups of five teams each. In each group, teams will play each other in a single-legged round-robin format and the top two teams from each group will make the quarter-finals.

Group A: FC Goa, Mohammedan Sporting, Bengaluru FC, Jamshedpur FC, Indian Air Force
Group B: East Bengal, ATK Mohun Bagan, Mumbai City FC, Rajasthan United FC, Indian Navy
Group C: Neroca FC, Trau FC, Hyderabad FC, Chennaiyin FC, Army Red
Group D: Odisha FC, NorthEast United FC, Kerala Blasters FC, Sudeva Delhi FC Army Green
The matches will be played in five venues across three cities.
Group A and B will be hosted in three venues in Kolkata - The VYBK or Salt Lake Stadium, Naihati Stadium and Kishore Bharati Stadium. The Khuman Lampak Stadium in Imphal, Manipur will play host to the Group C matches while the Group D fixtures will be played at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati, Assam.
The final is scheduled at the Salt Lake Stadium on September 18.
East Bengal and Mohun Bagan are the most successful teams in the Durand Cup with 16 titles each. Both the Kolkata giants are in Group B for Durand Cup 2022 and will face off in the famed Kolkata Derby on August 28.
